Some new creatures

While the lady was undergoing work, some new friends arrived at the studio.
Two finger-knitted dolls, for a new workshop I am going to conduct.
They chose to spend the afternoon in a rather interesting location yesterday.

Although these two have been living here for a while, they haven't been introduced yet. So here they are – both of them are the result of one old and ruined Teletubby softie, and were created for a toy repair workshop I conducted two months ago. The idea behind the workshop was to use the repair as an excuse for creating something new and original out of old items.
The creation of these items is one of the most fun things I have ever done for a living.
During the last few months, while I was busy with the lady, the creation of those items was like a relief: to make something simple, creative and innovative for the workshop, which is fun as well.

Creatures' Association

I am glad to introduce you today to the first three members of the Creatures' Association. Those three are known as the founders.

This photo was taken during their first Association meeting, where they drafted the creatures' Manifest, which they have already misplaced; there are some rules they all agreed upon, but they can remember only a few of them.
On their monthly meeting (which they don't always remember to attend, and when they do attend, they don't remember what they should discuss), they drink a few glasses of Ouzo together, share the latest gossip of the creature sphere, and go back home after an hour or so.
All the Association members have a similar shape, but each has different colors, fabrics and features, and, of course, a totally unique personality.

This one is known as the Wise One.

This one is the Clubber, the party creature.

And this one is the Mischievous One.

Mr. big creature

So here he is: Mr. big creature! He was waiting for long time on my crochet hooks, kept me busy crocheting, unpicking and re-crocheting, till yesterday, when he told me "that's it, I am ready to go out". I had some doubts, but he was determined, pointed the camera and said: "now!"
Comparing to my other creatures he is quite big, he stands 28m/11.2" tall; including his tail, he is 35cm/14" long and approximately 25cm/10" width.
It was a new challenge for me to deal with such a big dude, after all the miniatures I have been creating lately.
He was crocheted by fabric scraps, remains of sewing workshop, one of many we have around in the neighborhood (I should tell more about it in another post soon).
I painted his eyes on small spheres, and crocheted the eyelashes by vintage hairy yarn.
As he doesn't like it when it's cold he would always wear his blue scarf on.
Sometime he can turn moody.

A rest would cheer him up.

Creature diet and creature love.

Moon Man and Lady Creature met the new creature during their afternoon walk; he was still enjoying his picnic for one.
He was glad to go home with them.
Moon Man and the new creature were delighted to find out they are both keeping the same diet.
When Moon Man went to bed, Lady Creature and the new creature found out they had something in common as well. ;-)

A Picnic for One

The new creature...

… felt claustrophobic and bored in his own room.

So he packed his stuff,

and went out.

He spent a wonderful time out there.

Lady creature

Little Lady Creature holds her little handbag and wears her pink sweater – all ready to go out and explore the world. She has doubts about it; maybe it would be better staying in.

Lady creature is made out of unique combination of materials and techniques; her body, hands, and tail are made out of upcycled old socks. Her sweater made out of old sock as well, it has too tiny pockets and two studs. It can be taken off too.The crocheted vest collar embellished with small piece of vintage lace ribbon. The same lace ribbon is also used as the creature's headband and pieces of it stitched the back of her ears. This ribbon is at least 70 years old, it was belonged to my grandmother and I received it as a special gift from her few years ago. Her head is crocheted with cotton threads and facial features are embroidered.

Calm creature

I left the dolls for a while; sometimes the human-like dolls require so much concentration and patience that I am getting tired of making them.

Monday afternoon, I dug out one piece of sock from a collection of sock scraps that piled up on my desk. At first, I thought it was going to be another bird, but out of stitching and crocheting, this little creature emerged.
Not a bird for sure, just a creature; and a calm one, I assume.
He is now listed on my Etsy doll store.

No summer schools for socks dolls

Socks creature junior on his summer vacation, singing his famous tillalay tillily tilloy...
song. It is a special song for holidays.
I just felt the same this week when I had time off from my weekly workshops, unfortunately tomorrow I had to teach a summer workshop.
The creatures will stay at home, lucky they there are no summer schools for socks dolls.
